There's something about Manhattan...

Treat a boring day, a day which you spend with enormous lack of imagination, with a film. Take Manhattan for example, even though you've seen it before, this time it fits perfect on the situation. Well, you push play and your eyes see these incredible black and white pictures, little moving-picture postcards. Atmospheric gray shots, each with its own story, snowy streets drowned in evening lights, seen from the point of view of a puppy. Everything has a light taste of poetry, from New York's immense buildings seen by night, billboards and street signs that hurt your eyes, fireworks electrocuting the entire sky, leaving light dust behind. Rich blacks, slightly underexposed interiors where characters affected maybe by the city they live in, have endless conversations on a variation of topics, making no point at the end. Simple, beautiful compositions, shots where only highlights guide you through and help you follow the actors inside it. If I wouldn't be writing about a Woody Allen film, I would make a reference about the music played in the background, saying it's so..Woody Allen. Cinematography's so intimate, matching the story and the relation(ship)s between characters. Besides the way Gordon Willis handled photography, I love the fact that there's a joke or reference every step of the conversation, not just common humor, but sometimes sad or (auto)ironical and you find yourself laughing. Too bad that this 2.35:1 film can only be seen on a laptop.
Two things to mention before I stop writing, Diane Keaton made me think of Julie Delpy's character in Before Sunset, and second, Meryl Streep looked incredible, I'm just curious why Allen cast her for this part, not taking into consideration her acting talent.

Workshop Zorobabel la Anim'est

După ce vreme de trei ediţii Anim’est a prezentat cele mai bune filme de animaţie ale anului, după ce anul trecut atelierul de animaţie 2D a avut un foarte mare succes, anul acesta, din nou, festivalul vă propune, timp de 5 zile, un work-shop de animaţie. Între 5 şi 9 octombrie, la Librăria Cărtureşti din str. Verona, vă dau întâlnire trainerii de Zorobabel - Belgia.

Workshop-ul de benzi desenate şi filme animate Zorobabel a văzut lumina zilei în aprilie 1994, la iniţiativa unor creatori care au dezvoltat un proiect pedagogic, ce-şi propunea să transforme animaţia într-o formă de educaţie. De aceea, unul dintre scopurile animatorilor de la Zorobabel este de a-i ajuta pe elevi să înţeleagă nu doar o parte din tainele realizării filmului, dar şi implicaţiile sale sociale şi culturale.

Cu o experienţă de 15 ani în lucrul cu copii şi tineri, trainerii Zorobabel colaborează frecvent cu centre culturale (Foyer Culturel d'Evere, Centre Culturel Jacques Franck), şcoli (Académie des Beaux-Arts Jean-Jacques Gaillard, Athénée Royal de Schaerbeek, Decroly, ZEP of Forest and Saint-Gilles) sau centre sociale (Le Douzerome, Le Crac, le Centre de Formation des Animateurs, l'Agence de Prévention du Sida, Le Monde au bout des doigts), obţinând rezultate excelente la nivel educaţional, dar şi artistic. Astfel, o parte dintre filmele realizate în cadrul acestor workshop-uri au fost invitate în festivaluri şi chiar premiate.

Caroline Nugues-Bourchat şi Marie-Rose Vella vor încerca să arate că tehnica realizării filmelor de animaţie, ce poate să pară inaccesibilă, nu este de neînţeles. Ele vor explica şi proba în practică cu participanţii, fiecare dintre paşii de la o temă dată la un film animat. Rezultatul workshopului, adică cele 15 creaţii ale participanţilor, vor putea fi vizionate la finalul lucrului.

Anim'est 2009

Anim'est, 2-11 octombrie, editia IV.

Singurul festival de film de animaţie din Bucureşti şi cel mai important din România, Anim’est contabilizează, pentru primele trei ediţii, 900 de filme proiectate şi peste 18.000 de spectatori. Consacrat pe plan internaţional, evenimentul a avut ca invitaţi mari nume ale animaţiei mondiale, precum John R Dilworth şi Bill Plympton (nominalizaţi la Premiul Oscar), Hayo Freitag sau Juan Pablo Zaramella şi a prezentat cele mai importante filme de animaţie premiate la Cannes, Annecy, Animadrid sau Animateka.

Pentru că odată cu dezvoltarea festivalului s-a observat creşterea interesului pentru animaţie atât din partea publicului, cât şi din partea profesioniştilor, Anim’est vă aşteapă în perioada 2 - 11 octombrie, la cea de-a patra ediţie, cu o ofertă şi mai generoasă. Pentru prima dată festivalul îşi aşteaptă publicul în patru locaţii: Cinematografele Patria, Union, Elvira Popescu şi Terasa Verona (Librăria Cărtureşti). Şi tot pentru prima dată, în cadrul Anim’est are loc Creepy Animation Night, o întreagă noapte dedicată filmelor de animaţie şi muzicii, reunite într-un show mixat de Pakito (Franţa).

Dintre cele peste 600 filme primite pentru selecţie (s-au primit, în premieră, filme din Malaezia, Chile, Peru, Columbia, Madagascar, Mozambic), au fost alese pentru competiţie 199, grupate în şase secţiuni: lung-metraj, scurt-metraj, film românesc, film studenţesc, videoclip & advertising şi, balkanimation, transformat în acest an din show-case, în concurs.
Ţara prezentată în acest an la Anim’est este Japonia, iar evenimentul central al acestei prezentări este Retrospectiva Hayao Miyazaki. Cunoscut pentru Spirited Away, pentru care a primit Oscarul în 2003, şi Howl’s Moving Castle, pentru care a fost nominalizat din nou în 2006, Hayao Miyazaki este considerat unul dintre cei mai mari animatori din toate timpurile.

Întâlniri cu Mike Reiss (SUA), scenarist al filmelor Simpsons Family şi Ice age 4, Guilaine Bergeret (Franţa), reprezentant al SacreBleu production, un cunoscut producător şi distribuitor de scurt-metraje şi Marie Anne Fontainer (Franţa), decan al facultăţii Supinforcom, una dintre cele mai mari şcoli de animaţie din lume, sunt trei dintre evenimentele Anim’est care nu trebuiesc ratate. Georges Schwitzgebel (Elveţia), un clasic al animaţiei premiat la Cannes, Berlin, Annecy este invitatul special al acestei ediţii Anim’est.

Semantics won't do

Nouvelle Vague, easy to love mainstream tribute cover band. They seem to really love that kind of music, and they don't show it by wearing mohawks, but by making three records. To make it their music somehow. Music from that era was blamed by uptight British media in the 70's and 80's and was hailed by very young middle class people because it spoke the truth.
My favorite songs are In a matter or speaking and Master and Servant, both originally by Depeche Mode. Also, I can't help not to keep listening All my colors (Echo and the Bunnymen), the Bauhaus and the Clash covers. And there's also the DEAD KENNEDYS cover, the Cure cover and the Sex Pistols cover. And the... I'll stop now...

A Bad Night

Gus Van Sant is best known by film freaks for his early work (Discipline of D.E., Mala Noche, Drugstore Cowboy, My own private Idaho). Future film freaks know him for Elephant and Paranoid Park and normal people for Good Will Hunting and maybe, Milk, the eight Oscar nominations blast. Whatever category you're part of, it's your business.

25000$ and 16 mm film Mala Noche took to be made in 1985. This high contrast, under and overexposed film tells the story of Walt's friendship with two illegal immigrants and his unfulfilled love with one of the boys. It's not a big deal this mixed up story about 3 guys, but the courage and sincerity behind it turned it into a great debut.
Walt, played by Tim Streeter is a young "privileged" American who falls in love with 16 years old Mexican, Johnny. While having the charm, but not having the money, he fails to make the stubborn Mexican share his feelings. What he gets though is his friend, another young and confused one by the name of Pepper. These two end up having a short, meaningless relationship.

An achievement of this experimental movie is that the non-narrative formula was very creatively sustained by, maybe sometimes improvised, but powerful cinematography of John Campbell. Along with film noir aesthetics there's also a grunge mood and look throughout this movie, and I don't mean Streeter's shirts and torn t-shirt he's always dresses with (he's the stereotypical Gus Van Sant character that you also see with Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix in his next film).
What makes this film a pleasure to watch are the grainy black and white shots (some people know what I mean...) along with the contrastry images. Powerful scenes are shot at night where you hardly see dark streets (by day or by night, I'm sure Portland doesn't look in real life the way this director shoots it) and characters wrapped in cigarettes smoke. In this film the heart shaped ashtray is always full and glasses always empty. A must see for the first category I named in the beginning.
